Bandera 100k report 2011 (via Lizahoward’s Blog)

“She’s ten minutes behind you!”  That’s what my father in-law yelled at me around mile 42.  Five miles later “She’s eight minutes behind you!”  It was down to “Six minutes!” nine miles before the finish.  Sheesh.  There are worse things than running a 100k race with Meghan Arbogast and Pam Smith gaining on you each mile, but they certainly didn’t come to mind yesterday afternoon 50 miles into the race.  (Giardia?  Giant silverfish?) I really want … Read More

Bandera Trail Runs 2011 Directors Report

By Race Director Joe Prusaitis

Bandera 100km
2011 USA Track & Field 100km Trail National Championships
Bandera, TX
8 Jan 2011

It all happened so fast… all of it. Landing the USA Track & Field 100km Trail National Championship just 4 weeks before the race date. The rain that suddenly slammed the race.and the runners who hammered the course records in all three races. 256 started with 249 finishing the 25km, 199 with 192 finishes in the 50km, and 171 with 129 finishes in the 100km. 41 of those who did not finish the 100km dropped into the 50km to increase their finish total to 233. 626 total runners were on the course at the same time, and it was not crowded. All three races started on different parts of the course at the same time so as to keep each race separate from the other. Continue reading

Cactus Rose Directors Report (Joe Prusaitis)

Cactus Rose 100mi & 50mi
Bandera, TX
Hill Country State Natural Area
Oct 30-31, 2010

Cactus Rose continues to surprise and enlighten. The local trail runners know all about it but for those who come in blind… it is not what it appears to be. The course is well marked, the aid stations are evenly spaced every 5 miles, plenty of water and ice, chip timing tracks every 25 mile loop, the shirts are high quality tech material, the buckles and medals are the best, winners awards are rustic and fitting, volunteers roam the course to make sure it is set up, maintained, and taken back down efficiently, each runner receives a waterproof map with aid station splits, and the ONLY thing that is different from many of the other main-stream races is simply the lack of food at the aid stations, and this there is no need for the people who deal with the food. The runners are asked to bring their own because they always know what is best for themselves. The veterans already know this and most usually avoid the food tables anyway. So… its just a simple old school and very fun trail race on one of the nastiest but beautiful regions of the Texas Hill Country. It kicks your butt while it lifts your spirit. Continue reading

Team Traverse’s Melanie Fryar on running in Gibraltar this November.

So. I haven't posted in a long while. And I have a lot of running news to write about. I'll start with the good. I am on the USATF 100k team going to Gibraltar to run in the World Championship this November! The race is November 7th. I am so very excited about this! The opportunity to run in a race full of the worlds best runners just blows my mind. To be considered one of the USA's top female athletes is something I still can't grasp enough to f … Read More

Best Laid Plans – Larry King

The Bear 100 Ultramarathon

The best laid plans often go awry, to loosely paraphrase the quote.  As I lay in bed on a Sunday night, my mind wonders aimlessly recounting, in complete randomness, each mile of a race I did not finish.  The Bear was supposed to be the exclamation point for the year with a predetermined reward, including no running, of rest for the entire month of October.  Instead, the goal of crossing the finish line was not met.  It is a bitter pill to swallow after experiencing the absolute best training cycle for a race.  And, do I forego the October reward?
